In the SISCO proposal we committed to having a joint programme of work and also to having a network meeting as close to the beginning of the SISCO starting date as possible. We are therefore now proposing that we have our first 2-day meeting
at Durham on Tues/Wed 1-2 October 2002.
This is more or less after the telescope deadlines at the end of September. We will also be able to use SISCO to fund the travel etc. Term starts here that week but we have pre-booked some accommodation near the Physics Department in local small hotels. Carlos Frenk has kindly offered the use of the seminar room in the new Institute for Computational Cosmology which will be open by that time on the upper floor of the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics.
We hope that most of the node coordinators will be able to attend. The aim of this 'kick-off' meeting will be to decide what the nature of the joint research programmes for SISCO will be. So if you want to influence how this network programme will proceed then it is in every node's best interest to have as heavyweight representation at this meeting as possible. The SISCO post-docs and pre-docs will also, of course, be welcome, as will many Durham locals. A few non-SISCO speakers might also be invited such as Joachim Krautter and/or Alvio Renzini (ESO Working Group for Surveys), Jim Emerson (VISTA), Brian Boyle (AAT 2dF), Steve Warren (UKIDSS), Olivier leFevre (VIMOS). Other suggestions are welcome - although the idea is to keep the focus here on the SISCO nodes plus survey project scientists. Future meetings may have a more broad invitation list from non-SISCO institutes. The plan is to have talks from each of the nodes on their current survey programme and proposed joint programme plus talks from the external speakers. The final afternoon will be set aside for a 'brain-storming' session on possible SISCO projects.
Therefore please put the SISCO kick-off meeting dates of 1-2 October 2002 in your diaries.
Could you please confirm with Tom Shanks (tom.shanks@durham.ac.uk) how many from each node will be attending and your accommodation needs as soon as possible.
Note that the cut-price Go airline now operates between London Stansted and Newcastle airport, as well as from Stansted to various locations in Europe. Click here for more travel information.
