I graduated from King's College London in 1979 with a degree in Physics and then moved to Durham to do a PhD in experimental gamma ray astronomy. After a period of postdoctoral work on nuclear gamma ray astronomy, I began reseach on astronomical adaptive optics for optical and near infrared wavelengths.
I was the Project Scientist for the NAOMI adaptive optics instrument built for the William Herschel Telescope, one of the Isaac Newton Group of telescopes. NAOMI was funded by PPARC and was built by the Durham Astronomical Instrumentation Group and the UK Astronomical Technology Centre in Edinburgh.
In October 1998 I became a lecturer in the Physics Department here at Durham University, and in January 2004 I became a Senior Fellow.
I currently work on the Vista telescope project and on various aspects of Adaptive Optics, including Rayleigh laser beacons for Ground-Layer Adaptive Optics.
