Large Interacting Galaxies
Image of a spiral galaxy in EAGLE, showing how some of its gas seems to be pulled out of the disc. This happens often when another galaxy comes close, and is due to the tidal forces between the galaxies. Arp 188 is a spectacular example.
The movie illustrates the three dimensional structure of these interacting galaxies in EAGLE.
It cycles between dark matter, gas, and stars, as in the “Small Cluster” example.
You also see lots of substructure in the dark matter, that does not correspond to visible galaxies, whereas some substructures do harbour a little galaxy. EAGLE allowed us to investigate this fascinating observation in more detail.
