About

Methodology

The movies were made from optical images taken on the CTIO (Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory) by the MUSYC collaboration and sub-mm images taken by ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array). The images were processed using catalogues and a segmentation map to make a thumbnail image of each galaxy. At the same time the catalogue was used to find the right ascention adn declination of each galaxy to obtain X and Y coordinates. To obtain a Z coordinate for each galaxy the redshift was used. This processing was done using sextractor and IDL programs. These galaxies were then loaded into Partiview. A script was then used to take a number of screenshots along a path that the camera in partiveiw would take. These screenshots were then encoded and edited using iMovie and Quicktime.

The 3D alma Array was created using Autodesk 3ds max.

Data

Sub-mm

The Sub-mm data was taken by the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array), program 2011.0.00294.S . Colours for the ALMA galaxies were produced from Herschel 250, 350 and 500 micron data. The catalogue used was produced by Wardlow et al 2011

Optical

The Sub-mm data was taken by the MUSYC collaboration on the CTIO telescope. A photo-z catalogue was used along with the images.
