Image simulation with shapelets:
The shapelets formalism can be used to simulate unique yet realistic
astronomical images, containing galaxies of all morphological types. Papers
describing the technique include
- The core method: Massey et al. 2004 (MNRAS 348 214)
- Multicolour expansion: Ferry et al. 2008 (Astropart. Phys. 30 65)
- Automation & documentation: Dobke et al. 2010 (PASP in press)
It has been used in the STEP and
FLIP projects to improve weak lensing measurement algorithms, and also to
predict the sensitivity of a next-generation space telescope.
Examples of deep
simulated images are already available, as well as the simage IDL code to
generate more.
